Notarised Translation

In accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Notariat” (Article 79), a notary has the right to perform a translation and certify the accuracy of the translation if there is an official confirmation of knowledge of the languages of the source and target languages. Notaries with professional knowledge of a foreign language are very rare. Therefore, an official translation with notary certification is usually carried out as follows:

  1. A written translation of a document is performed by a certified translator, who draws up the document in a proper manner and signs it in the presence of a notary. By signing the translation, the translator confirms the quality, and accuracy of the translation made by him/her and its compliance with the source text, as well as the availability of the necessary qualifications for this type of translation.
  2. The notary certifies the authenticity of the translator’s signature and the availability of a document confirming the translator’s education and level of qualification and then makes a relevant entry in the register.

Types of notarised translation

As a rule, only the translation of documents that are properly executed and contain the seals and signatures of the relevant officials can be notarised. However, some notaries are more loyal to notarised translation and can even certify translations of personal correspondence, marketing texts, technical instructions, scientific articles and etc.

Notary certification of document translation may be performed as follows:

  • notary certification of translation (notary certification of the authenticity of the translator’s signature and the availability of relevant qualifications);
  • notary certification of the accuracy of the translation + notarised copy of the original document (notary certification of the authenticity of the translator’s signature and qualification, and photocopy of the document);
  • notary certification of translation with or without a notarised copy of the original document + duplicate in English of the notary’s certifying endorsement.
