Peculiarities of scientific and technical translation
The language of scientific and technical texts and documents differs significantly from colloquial vocabulary, the language of advertising texts and fiction.
Lexical differences can be noticed even by those who are far from the world of philology and the translation profession. Scientific and technical texts and documentation are usually saturated with highly specialised terminology, which usually can not be found in a standard dictionary or in a specialised one.
As for grammatical differences, a person who is not related to the profession of translator or philologist is unlikely to notice them. One of the most striking features of a scientific and technical text is the abundance of common complex sentences used to express the links between facts, phenomena, objects, subjects and actions.
Besides, there are differences in the construction of sentences between English and Ukrainian texts. For example, the use of impersonal forms of verbs, passive voice, participial constructions and specific constructions is more typical for English scientific style texts than Ukrainian scientific texts.
A scientific and technical translator must be able to analyse the original, professionally cope with the difficulties encountered and create a text in the target language taking into account all language norms and the genre of translation.
Professional quality translation is a text in the language required by the customer:
- in which the content of the source text is accurately conveyed;
- thoughts are presented with strict clarity in a succinct format and concise form, typical for a scientific and technical literary style;
- in full compliance with generally accepted norms; the text must be read and perceived by the reader naturally and lively.

- rely on context and logic, and then on an article in the dictionary;
- select a term or word as precisely as possible;
- not only syntactically, but also logically analyse the text for correct accents;
- avoid the slightest deviation from the language norms;
- break up complex and voluminous sentence structures;
- avoid synonymy; the same phenomenon, object, subject, etc. cannot be called differently in one translation;
- decipher acronyms and abbreviations;
- ensure that the general text of the translation matches the translation of related tables, drawings, graphs, figures, etc.;
- cross-check the terms, spelling and use of words whose correctness is in doubt;
- understand the units of measure and be able to recalculate dimensions in the event of such a requirement from the customer;
- read a lot of magazines, articles, books written by native speakers;
- agree to translate unfamiliar topics only if there is sufficient time to study them;
- be sure to edit and proofread your translation some time after it is finished; for example, one or two days later.
A translator is not recommended:
- perform literal translation (word-for-word translation);
- unquestionably believe the original; often authors of scientific and technical texts and documentation have no philological education, which means that errors in writing, misprints, various language errors, paralogism or loss of logic cannot be excluded;
- limit themselves to the meanings found in dictionaries.
Any translator is strictly prohibited to:
- change the content and significantly distort the meaning of the source text, add new content, make any explanations or comments, i.e. act as a co-author;
- skip or leave fragments of the text without translation;
- offer and leave several translation options for the same term or word.
